From Notes to Knowledge: How Automatic Linking Changes Everything

Most people have hundreds of notes that never connect to each other. Automatic linking turns isolated writing into a living knowledge system.

The Isolation Problem

You write a meeting note mentioning "Project Alpha." You have another note titled "Project Alpha — Requirements." They're about the same thing, but they don't know about each other. Multiply this by hundreds of notes over months and years, and you have a collection — not a knowledge base.

How Automatic Linking Works

You approve the suggestion (mandatory diff — the same system as AI edits). Once linked, both notes appear in each other's backlinks. The knowledge graph visualisation shows the relationship as a connected node.

The Knowledge Graph

As links accumulate, a force-directed SVG graph emerges showing how your notes relate. Clusters form naturally: work notes cluster together, personal notes form their own group, research topics create dense networks.

This isn't a feature you build manually. It grows from your writing. Every link you approve adds a connection. Over time, the graph reveals the structure of your thinking — topics you write about most, projects that connect to everything, ideas that bridge different areas.

Backlinks: The Other Direction

When Note A links to Note B, Note B shows a backlink from Note A. You didn't have to do anything — the relationship is automatically bidirectional. Open any note and see everything that references it.

This is powerful for hub notes. A "Project Alpha" note might be linked from 15 meeting notes, 3 decision records, and 7 research notes. The backlinks section shows you everything related without you having to remember where you mentioned it.

Why This Beats Folders

Folders force a single hierarchy. A note about "AI for Healthcare" — does it go in the AI folder or the Healthcare folder? With links, it lives once and connects to both. No duplication. No arbitrary categorisation decisions. Just relationships.

Tags help, but they're flat. Links are directional and contextual. A tag says "this note is about AI." A link says "this note references a specific other note about AI architecture decisions." The link carries more information.
